The Ostrakon Project is an initiative by Air Balloon aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues and inspiring individuals to take meaningful action. At its core, the project embodies the belief that everyone, no matter how small their contribution, has the power to impact positive change for our planet.
The name of the project carries a profound dual symbolism. It draws inspiration from the ancient Greek word “ostrakon,” a term that referred to ceramic shards used for voting in referendums in classical Athens. During this practice, citizens could vote to ostracize a public figure deemed a threat to democracy. The Ostrakon Project leverages this ancient tradition as a reminder that people hold the power to shape not only the political landscape but also the environmental future of our world. In this context, we encourage everyone to “vote” for the preservation and protection of our planet.
In zoology, an “ostrakon” refers to the hard, protective shell that encases the bodies of various animals, such as mollusks, crustaceans, and echinoderms. These natural structures serve purposes ranging from defense and camouflage to respiration, embodying the resilience and adaptability of nature. Similarly, the Ostrakon Project aims to be a protective shell—a movement that shields our environment and advocates for its resilience.
Our vision is for the Ostrakon Project to evolve into an institutional event, held annually with a unique environmental theme. Each year, we aim to spotlight a different cause or endangered species, bringing attention to the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. The inaugural year, titled “Timeless Travellers,” was dedicated to the protection of sea turtles and their threatened habitats.
This year, we are proud to present the second edition of the project under the theme “Majestic Scavengers,” focusing on the conservation of the Griffon Vulture in Cyprus.
Through events like these, we aspire to build a legacy of environmental stewardship that inspires and mobilizes communities, ensuring that the Ostrakon Project becomes a beacon for conservation and sustainable change for generations to come.
We hosted the ‘Timeless Travellers’ fundraising event on September 8th, 2023, at the Hani of Ibrahim gallery in old Pafos. With a sole mission of saving the endangered sea turtles of Cyprus and the Mediterranean Sea.
